Queen Paola is in hospital

Queen Paola of Belgium is in hospital after suffering a vertebral fracture. Paola, who is 79, is being treated at the Cliniques Universitare St Luc in Brussels after being hurt following a fall.





The Belgian Royal Household made a brief statement, confirming that Queen Paola was receving hospital treatment and added that her injury didn't pose any neurological complications. It's expected her full recovery will take several months.


Paola married Albert, then Prince of Liege in 1959 and they became King and Queen of the Belgians in 1991 on the death of Albert's brother, Baudouin. Her husband abdicated in favour of their eldest son, Philippe, on July 21st 2013 since when Paola has had a low profile. She was last seen in public on November 15th for the annual King's Day celebrations.
