Mary: ten years on from her first royal engagement

A decade ago, the mammoth day of celebrations and official events that marked the engagement of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Mary Elizabeth Donaldon was just getting underway.  But the one thing that always remains of these major events is the official photo.  It's not like we weren't treated to endless shots of the couple of October 8th 2003.  But there is always an official portrait to mark the event and capture the historic event for posterity.

Mary's turn to look on in adoration - one of the official portraits of a new royal couple who's official relationship began ten years ago today

Mary and Frederik have made a habit of doing the one looking at the camera, the other looking on adoringly thing and the engagement portraits were our first taste of that but they did an eyes front version for posterity as well.

Mary had been snapped in the years between meeting her prince and getting engaged to him but the number of photos of her up til then didn't even match the amount taken on that one day when her life changed forever.  Since then she's become one of the most photographed women in Europe but despite all the shots of her between then and now, it's the official portraits that will tell her tale in the history books.
