The start of 2014 has turned out to be just as difficult for the Spanish royal family as the end of 2013. Or the start of 2013. Or the end of 2012. The second child of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, the Infanta Cristina, has been named as a formal suspect and will appear in court in connection with allegations of fraud and money laundering on March 8th 2014.

The infanta's husband, Inaki Urdangarin, is under investigation for alleged embezzlement. The couple has always denied any wrongdoing. The trial of a descendant of Spain's royal family would be unprecedented.
