Albert and Paola are great grandparents

Albert and Paola have welcomed a new generation to their family as they become great grandparents for the very first time

Albert II and Paola of Belgium have joined the great grandparents club. The former monarch and his consort welcomed a great granddaughter today and saw their royal dynasty move into a third generation.

They welcomed this new era for their dynasty as their eldest grandson, Amadeo, and his wife, Lili, became parents for the very first time. Lili gave birth to their daughter in the early hours of the morning in Brussels.  As Albert and Paola became great grandparents, their only daughter, Astrid, became a granny for the first time too.

The little girl's name isn't known yet but she weighed 3.3 kilos and measured 52 centimetres. Most importantly, she and her mum are doing just fine.

The youngest member of the Belgian Royal Family is seventh in line to her country's throne and has been born just shy of two years after her parents got married in Rome. And her arrival means that the dynasty of Albert, the unexpected king who became a monarchical success story, heads into a new generation.
