A double dose of queens

While Queen Sofia and Queen Letizia were appearing side by side at the First Communion of Princess Leonor, another two consorts were also sharing the load. Queen Mathilde of the Belgians and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands both helped open the 'Vormidable' Exhibition in The Hague giving this big cultural event a double dose of queens to get it started.

The royal ladies were there to officially inaugurate the exhibition which celebrates contemporary Flemish sculpture. It also marks the 20th anniversary of closer cultural co-operation between Flanders and the Netherlands.

The two royal ladies had clearly colour co-ordinated before meeting with Maxima in bright orange with a striking blue plume on her huge hat and Mathilde in an orange and blue print dress with a blue turban style hat. Two halves of one royal portrait looking picture perfect.

The two women, who are said to get on remarkably well, clearly enjoyed this latest meeting - it's not the first time they have carried out a joint engagement and the latest one seemed to keep them both very happy. Queen Mathilde had earlier attended a lunch for leading members of the Belgian community in The Hague before hooking up with her friend and fellow consort for their official engagement. A case of a double dose of queens adding an extra layer of royal flair to a major cultural event.
