The Royal Wardrobe

If you want to win in the royal fashion stakes this week then it's best sticking to the fifties. There were two stand out looks in the past seven days and both of them went back decades for their inspiration. But while Charlene of Monaco and Sophie of Wessex hit the heights with their fifties looks, Letizia of Spain also gave it a go and just missed. The past isn't always a friendly place.

The best royal look of the week was easily Princess Charlene at her twins' christening. The babies wore Dior and looked fabulous but then so did mum who looked even more amazing in her palest grey green dress with matching pillbox.

Only the mesh gloves divided opinion but with Charlene looking chic, in control and happier than anyone can remember this is a close to being a defining outfit for the princess and it will certainly be remembered for years to come.

Princess Caroline didn't disappoint either at the christening choosing a pale cornflower blue which was outstanding in its simplicity and elegance and topped with a matching wide brimmed hat.  The twins' other royal auntie, Princess Stephanie, also looked striking in royal blue with white trim.

Not far behind in the style stakes was the Countess of Wessex who also showed a hint of 50s inspiration in a bright green dress worn to ceremonies in the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey where she represented the Queen at commemorations for the 70th anniversary of their liberation. The dress with its contrasting black pillbox and shoes is one of Sophie's most striking looks and easily a contender for royal outfit of the year, as seen in Steve Falla's photo below.

Sophie was in a black jacket, pedal pushers and nude shoes for a visit to RAF Benson not long afterwards and looked fabulous again.

When Kate wears similar outfits to the one Sophie chose for the first garden party of the season at Buckingham Palace, held this week, there are headlines around the world. But the countess' palest pink coat, dress and hat come fascinator was just as lovely and almost completely ignored. Here she's seen with the Duchess of Cornwall who, like Princess Caroline of Hanover, was in a cornflower blue kind of mood and matched on the hat front as well.

It was almost a clean sweep of fashion hits for Sophie but her last look of the week went from fab to borderline frumpy as she stepped out in a print dress and black jacket that yelled office rather than high office but still ticked the elegance boxes.

The Queen ignored the rain and went for sunshine in the week with a golden yellow coat and hat for that first garden party of the year at Buckingham Palace.

She'd chosen dove grey for a beacon lighting at Windsor to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

But went for black at the Service of Thanksgiving held at Westminster Abbey a few days later but there was a hint of spring beneath it in a print dress with pink and white flowers just peaking through and a white flower on her hat.

The Duchess of Cornwall was in palest blue for the same event and rather stood out from the crowd in black and grey in her matching coat and hat.

And it was bright for Camilla and dark for the Queen again when they were snapped at the Windsor Horse Show a few days later. The Queen chose a navy cardigan and skirt while the duchess was all in white as she dropped a very striking curtsey to her mother in law as they said hello.

And it was back to basics for Camilla on a trip to Liverpool at the end of the week. The beige jacket and spot print skirt was familiar, comfortable and just very regular royal day at the royal office.

Queen Letizia's outfit from her husband's accession is one of her best, and most famous, looks but it caused controversy in the week when she chose it ahead of the traditional long black dress, peineta and mantilla to present Spain's flag to a division of the Civil Guard in Vitoria.

In fact, it was a bit of a hit and miss week for the usually top of the form consort. The 50s inspired Letizia look for a lunch with the President of Italy almost worked but the combination of big hair, bright lipstick and an ahead of trend floral skirt tipped made this one too odd to look good.

Likewise, the Spanish queen's Pocohontas moment for an award presentation at the end of the week. The dress on its own was OK for the very hot weather in Spain at the moment but the of the moment sandals were too much to get past.

Queen Sofia of Spain matched Elizabeth II with a nod to sunshine as she presented the prizes at the Madrid Open in bright yellow. Handing over a rather unusual looking gold trophy to Andy Murray, the queen looked sophisticated and elegant and about as well matched as any royal can be to standing between two sweaty men in bright sports clothes on a red clay tennis court.

And we usually expect Queen Sofia to be the first royal in a floral trouser suit once the weather warms up but while we've had some bright prints from the consort of Juan Carlos this year, she's got competition.  Queen Mathilde of the Belgians chose a black printed outfit in the style of Sofia for her trip to a music prize this week but while it might be ticking lots of fashion moment boxes it again fell into the almost but not quite there category.

Mathilde was back to her regal best for a meeting with two Chinese artists ahead of the official visit to their country she will make with King Philippe. Royal blue, lace effect, very Mathilde and rather nice.

Queen Silvia of Sweden had one engagement in the week when she presented diplomas to the latest graduates from her nursing scheme. She was casual for the event but her bright orange and navy combo stood out in the group photo - that's an experienced royal for you.

There was another striking colour on show later in the week when she and Crown Princess Victoria held an audience with organisations concerned with children's rights. Both women went for black trousers with satin blouse and tweed jacket but while the queen in waiting went for pale grey, Queen Silvia went for a very regal purple.

Crown Princess Victoria opened an exhibition later in the week and chose a rather stylish cream trouser suit for the event. With its wide legs and matching blouse it was another fashion win for the heiress who is fast becoming a fashion icon.

Her soon to be sister-in-law, Sofia Hellqvist, also appeared in some new official photos released to mark the launch of the Royal Household webpage about her upcoming royal wedding. She picked a similar style to the dresses she chose for her engagement press call and official engagement pictures but went for ice blue this time round.

Things were more sombre in Denmark with Queen Margrethe setting the tone in a grey two piece suit as she unveiled a very bright portrait of herself.

Princess Mary kept it dark with a navy trouser suit for a visit to declare some bridge walking officially open. She changed into a dark waterproof all in one with matching safety rope accessories and tried to look calm as she stood in the middle of a very high bridge.

There was another pair of dark trousers on show for her visit to Aalborg but a beige jacket added a bit of brightness to an otherwise low key week.

Princess Marie was treading the print dress with black jacket choice of Sophie Wessex and the Queen and and the bob of Queen Letizia as she attended an engagement at the start of the week.

And there was a hint of Princess Mary about her for her second appearance as she went for the pale jacket, dark trousers look her sister-in-law had chosen a day earlier and even wore very similar looking shoes.
