Meet Princess Charlotte

It's been one of the bookies' favourites for months on end and today it was confirmed as the name of the new fourth in line to the throne. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their daughter Charlotte.

Her full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana and she will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

The announcement was made just before 3pm. It's believed that William and Kate wanted to tell the Queen in person about their choice before making it public.

Charlotte has several centuries of royal history behind it, first entering public consciousness as the name of the wife of George III. It was the name of the only child of George IV and Caroline of Brunswick who was destined to be queen before dying in childbirth and it was given by Edward VII as a middle name to his youngest daughter, Maud, who became Queen of Norway.
