As the sun starts to break through the rain clouds that have dominated Europe in recent weeks, Queen Maxima was ready for it. She arrived at the official opening of the Holland Festival in Amsterdam on Saturday night in a picture perfect dress that said summer has definitely started.

The King and Queen of the Netherlands were present to see the festival, the largest one centred on performing arts in the country, spring into life. It will run for three weeks until June 26th by which time summer will be well and truly under way.

Maxima arrived at the City Theatre in Amsterdam with her husband under pale grey skies - the weather is getting warmer but it's taking its time about it.

That didn't deter the Dutch queen who chose a pale pink dress with darker pink floral print effect. The bell shaped skirt, mid length sleeves and boat style collar gave it a bit of a fifties feel while the coral accessories added another promise of summer.

The royal couple met plenty of wellwishers before settling down for an evening of entertainment then popping back stage to meet the performers.

Despite the cool grey weather of early June, Maxima has got summer started.
