Royal Wedding Tiaras: Princess Sofia of Sweden

Sofia of Sweden in her emerald tiara

If there's one thing a royal bride need, it's a tiara. And like many a royal bride before her in the last twenty years or so, Sofia had none to call her own. So she got one as a gift instead.

The diamond and emerald creation was a present from her new parents in law, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

It's an unusual and rather modern looking piece and the most striking thing about it is the use of emeralds. The green stones were a surprise for this bridal choice and instantly became its most famous part.
The oval shaped emeralds sit on top of diamonds arranged in sparkling shapes. There's another row of smaller diamonds beneath them and diamond points between the emeralds. But even with all those diamonds, this diadem is all about the emeralds.
Sofia has worn it several times since including at the Nobel Prize celebrations last December. But it's her wedding appearance that remains the most famous so far.

Like Princess Madeleine before her,  Princess Sofia chose a new veil for her wedding and she kept with her lace theme with a thin tulle veil with embellishments of lace.

It was attached to the top of Sofia's swept back semi bun and was tucked around it neatly enough to afford everyone a look at the traditional sprig of myrtle leaf tucked in the bride's hair.

It had a light airy feel to it and avoided the biggest pitfall of a long veil on a royal bride - being overwhelming. Sofia wore this veil rather than the veil wearing Sofia.

That's not to say it wasn't impressive in its scale - a full cathedral length veil and then some for this bride at the Royal Chapel. Its lace edging fitted the end of the train to create a pretty flowing effect.

The tiara and veil added to the modern effect of Sofia's wedding look. This royal bride really did things her way while keeping enough of a nod to royal tradition to avoid controversy on her wedding day. But it's the emerald tiara that really made its mark on June 13th 2015 - Sofia's very own piece of royal sparkle.
