The Royal Wardrobe: summer arrives

Summer is here. Never mind the rain, the umbrellas and even the rain macs that have made an appearance this week. There was enough sun and sparkle through the past seven days to ensure the Royal Wardrobe was filled with summer. From golden gala gowns to Ascot hats to remember, here are five of the best looks from the week just gone.

After a quiet few months, suddenly you can't move for appearances by Charlene of Monaco. And there was a pure princess dress for her as she hosted a cocktail party as part of the Monte Carlo television festival alongside her husband. The golden gown was covered in sparkles with a tulle skirt made for a fairytale and then some. Charlene looked stunning.

The Countess of Wessex gave us one of Ascot's best looks of recent years on Ladies Day when she wore an on trend and hard to beat white and coral outfit that started well and finished even better. The Fifties style skirt was matched in the chic stakes by the cut off top - yes, cut off top. Look at it and enjoy, it's marvellous. But it's the hat that tops this one off to perfection with highlights of coral and cream that make the whole look a total dream. Sophie is a style star.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden wowed in white as the week came to an end as she attended the Polar Music Award in Stockholm. Her cocktail dress had a simple shape with silver embellishments doing a lot of work at the top. It sparkled in a stylish, chic way - Victoria never fails to impress at this event and this year is no exception.

The Duchess of Cambridge went for white on her long awaited Royal Ascot debut and looked lovely. The lace Dolce and Gabbana dress was light and summery while the straw hat was just the right size and shape to add Ascot glamour without being overwhelming. Fresh, modern and very youthful, Kate had racecourse style nailed on her first attempt.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark hit all the on trend notes with a white dress worn for the launch of a ship in the week. The statement sleeves are so now they hurt while the floaty fabric of the gown is pure summer and then some. Add in the straw hat with huge flower and you have a dream of a royal outfit. Summer really has arrived in this week's Royal Wardrobe.
