Youth issues for William and Kate

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have put serious issues at the top of their agenda this week. Less than 24 hours after a series of engagements focused on mental health issues, Kate and William visited spent this afternoon hearing about how mentoring has helped young people find a brighter future.

The royal couple visited XLP, a youth organisation which was set up twenty years ago and which now works in schools and colleges across London. It offers support for young people and William and Kate visited to find out more, in particular, about a mentoring programme designed to help young people build a better life for themselves.

XL Mentoring is for people aged 11-18 and provides young people with a person who will give them one on one support, spending at least two hours a week with them to help them build confidence and deal with issues.

Over the period of a year they will talk to them, offer advice and help them work towards job and training goals. Many of the people it helps are facing emotional and psychological problems. Kate and William met several of those who have benefitted from the scheme as well as some of the people who work as mentors.

During their visit, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also saw a film about tackling knife crime - XLP was set up following a stabbing at a school - and they met a team who work with young people on the brink of being excluded from college.

Kate and William previously visited a project run by XLP in March last year - it was their last joint appearance before the birth of Princess Charlotte.
