The language of Letizia

Since the start of the year, she's kept things low key but this week Queen Letizia's unspoken hinted that might just be a thing of the past. While January and February saw barely any engagements and the cancellation of the State Visit to the UK because of the ongoing political situation following Spain's December elections, this week has been busy and then some. And the Queen of Spain has had her best smile on from start to finish.

Letizia herself has been caught up in controversy over the past few weeks after leaked text messages showed her giving support to a banker friend who has been accused of misusing funds. Meanwhile, the trial of her sister-in-law, Infanta Cristina, on charges of tax fraud continues. But as Letizia made a string of appearances at home and overseas, her body language said all of that was very far from her mind.

We first saw the Queen of Spain this week in Puerto Rico where she and her husband, King Felipe VI, were attending the Seventh International Congress on the Spanish Language.

In the early months of the year, Letizia kept her wardrobe very muted with lots of greys and black and white and very few fashion statements. This week, spring hit her style selections and it all began with a pale pink skirt suit we've seen before but could quite happily see again...and again and again.

It was worn to the opening of the language congress where there were more body language signs that the Spanish queen is on the up. Her husband. who was drawn into the text exchange but whose friendship with the banker in question was declared over by the Royal Household in the aftermath, held her hand and the two looked very close as they carried out this engagement.

Then we got a new outfit and there was no keeping the clothes conservative on this one. For a visit the following day to the Fort of San Felipe de Morro, Letizia chose a dove grey suit with cropped trousers and peep toe suede shoes which did chic with a modern edge. It was rather lovely.

Back home, there was barely a breath taken before Felipe and Letizia plunged into their next engagement, an official dinner at the Royal Palace for the President of Portugal. And if you wanted a statement from Letizia that she was feeling confident, then take a look at this.

Lipstick this bright and this red can only be worn if you're feeling at the very top of your game. Add in the Fifties style cocktail dress and all those sequins and this outfit said one thing - Letizia is back.

It was a trio of fashion hits, lots of smiles and confident poses that showed Spain's queen is trying to put the past few weeks behind her. And her language said she means to make a success of it.
