5 royal shades of grey

Kate's latest outfit has divided opinion. Her grey coat with grey hat, worn for the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey, was deemed a winner by some and a winter wobbler by others. The hat is fabulous, the coat gets busy close up but overall, it's a great look in grey. And the Duchess of Cambridge isn't the only royal woman to pick this shade in recent times - over the last fortnight or so we've been treated to plenty of shades of grey so here's a look at six of the best, starting with Kate's coat and hat.

The Duchess gave us not one, not two but three shades of grey in her outfit worn for the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey. The Erdem coat featured palest grey with darker grey lace motif while the stand out, by milliner John Boyd, was mid grey with a dark grey band. Add in dove grey shoes and bag and you have a top five of one colour on one duchess. And she looked pretty great to boot.

Queen Letizia of Spain is rather fond of grey coats. We know that because in the last week she has rarely appeared in anything else. Her big, on trend grey coat was seen over a black dress at a concert and then over a grey dress with a multi coloured scarf to break things up when she and King Felipe attended the opening of an exhibition on Cervantes. It's fashion forward, as we've come to expect from Letizia, and given the difficult time Spain's royals are currently experiencing then a muted wardrobe is probably a wise option.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands gave us a twinkling twist on grey when she added slivers of silver to it for a music event. OK,the crownless hat is always going to divide opinion but the side fastening jacket and sparkling skirt are eye catchers every day of the week. A glittering, gorgeous, great grey look.

Queen Mathilde of the Belgians also sparkled in silver as she hosted a State Visit from the President of Germany and his partner. For a night out at the Palais des Beaus Arts, Mathilde went for a pale cocktail dress with an almost skater style skirt and looked very fifties and very nifty in it. It's the palest of the grey offerings from the last few weeks but about as pretty as grey comes.

Princess Charlene, style icon extraordinaire, was choosing grey as March got under way as she wore a marl mix coat to a rugby tournament. While all eyes might have been on her son, Jacques, as he walked his way into the headlines, his mum looked cool and sophisticated in grey with black accessories. Five shades of royal grey and all looking great.
