Sweden's proud royal dads

As we get used to the name (Prince Oscar is pretty perfect, really) and wait for the official photos, it's worth looking back at just how proud second time around dad, Prince Daniel, was when he confirmed the details of the new addition to his family. He couldn't keep the smile from his face and why should he? Just hours after celebrating his wife safely giving birth to a healthy son, Prince Daniel met the media and beamed with happiness.

Prince Daniel of Sweden talks to the press about his newborn son

The first news of Sweden's new prince had come in an official announcement from the Royal Household which said that Crown Princess Victoria had given birth to a son at 8.28pm local time and that mother and son were doing well.  The baby prince weighed 8 pounds and measured 22 inches at birth.  Prince Daniel later met the press at the Karolinska Hospital in Solna where Sweden's newest royal had been born that evening and where the baby prince now slept with his mother while dad did the media bit.

Daniel told reporters that his son looked just like mum and that made him very happy. And of course one of the first questions was about how his daughter, Estelle, was getting on with being a big sister. The princess had been asleep when her brother was born, Daniel, said but added that she was very excited to be a big sister.  And he told reporters just how amazed he was at his wife and confirmed that he had cut the cord. Very modern, very sweet and a moment filled with paternal pride.

The following day, when Daniel was helping settle his son into his new home, his father in law made the official announcement of the new prince's name to a cabinet meeting called at the Royal Palace. And if you want to see another perfect example of a proud royal granddad - and proud dad celebrating his daughter's new son - look no further than this.

A very excited grandfather - King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden on the day he announced the names of his second grandson to the world

King Carl XVI Gustaf looked fit to burst as he announced that his latest grandchild, the new third in line to the throne is called Oscar Carl Olof. And the smile got bigger as he bestowed the title of Duke of Skane upon him - a title held by his own grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf. And if we thought these two men looked proud in the hours after Oscar's arrival, then the official photos will be something else. Olof Daniel Westling was born on the day that Carl Gustaf became King of Sweden. And this week they both beamed with pride as they shared the arrival of another generation of royalty as they celebrated the birth of Oscar Carl Olof - prince, son and grandson.

And there is a special page about the new prince of Sweden here.
