The Danish opening of parliament

Queen Margrethe II leads Denmark's royals the opening of parliament today

After Norway yesterday, Denmark today. It really is parliament opening season. Every country does things differently and after the carriages of the Netherlands and Sweden and the speech from King Harald in Oslo, the event in Copenhagen was much quieter but just as striking in its own way.

Parliament is traditionally opened in Denmark on the first Tuesday in October so right on cue, Queen Margrethe arrived at the Christiansborg Palace just before noon to watch her country's politicians get their new year under way.

Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim, Princess Marie and Princess Benedikte were waiting for her on the steps having arrived in the minutes beforehand.

They followed as Queen Margrethe led them into parliament and then towards the Royal Box to watch proceedings unfold.

There was a speech from Denmark's Prime Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, amidst all the ceremonial proceedings but royal involvement was kept to watching from afar. Low key maybe, but still filled with tradition.
