Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, made a whistlestop tour of northern Europe yesterday which included two royal audiences. Mrs Merkel met up with King Philippe of the Belgians and the Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg in the space of just a few hours as she visited their countries to talk about European integration.

First to say hello to Mrs Merkel were Henri and Maria Teresa of Luxembourg who welcomed her to their palace during her stop in their country.  Chancellor Merkel also held a meeting with the country's Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel.

Next stop was the Royal Palace in Brussels where King Philippe greeted the German Chancellor and they posed for photos before holding an audience. Angela Merkel also spent time at the University of Leuven where she was presented with an honorary doctorate.  A busy day but time for two royal audiences for Angela Merkel on her European whistlestop tour.
