The Royal Wedding of the year is here. Today Prince Carl Philip of Sweden marries Sofia Hellqvist in the Royal Chapel of the Royal Palace of Stockholm before royalty from around the world.
Carl Philip of Sweden and Sofia Hellqvist marry today
Carl Philip Edmund Bertil, Prince of Sweden and Duke of Varmland is third in line to his country's throne behind big sister, Crown Princess Victoria, and her daughter, Princess Estelle. He was born heir but lost that role when the succession laws changed seven months after he was born and precedence went to a monarch's eldest child regardless of gender. His bride Sofia Kristina Hellqvist is a former model and reality TV star who now devotes her time to charity work. Her past has been much commented on but it is in the past now. Today, she will marry the king who almost was and become a princess herself.
One prince, one princess in waiting and a lot of romance
The couple announced their engagement in June 2014 after a long relationship and have spoken several times of their love for one another. The prince has proved himself a devoted husband in waiting, defending his bride from criticisms over her past career choices and praising her to the hilt at every chance. The princess in waiting has spoken of her admiration for her groom's work and how special it is to be at his side in his public as well as private life.
One of the family now - the bride and groom with his parents, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, on the day they announced their engagement in June 2014
Today they make lifelong promises before one of the biggest gatherings of royalty seen on the continent for two years in a ceremony scheduled to start around 4.30pm local time. The royal guests will start to arrive in the hour before that and only one thing could take the spotlight off the happy couple - Princess Estelle will be there.
