Arise Sir Harry

The Queen has made her grandson, Prince Harry, a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. But while there's been plenty of joking about 'Sir Harry' the honour actually shows a deep affection and respect between grandmother and grandson. For this is a personal honour awarded by the Queen and it comes as her fourth grandchild begins a new era in his life and shows just what a success she thinks he has made of the part of his royal career just gone by.

The Royal Victoria Order was established in 1896 by Queen Victoria and membership remains in the personal gift of the reigning monarch. Being royal isn't an automatic entry into the order - the Queen gives membership as a thank you for services to the Monarchy and to her work. Prince Harry has been recognised as he brings to an end his military service with the Army and less than a year after his pivotal role in organising the hugely successful Invictus Games.

Prince Harry's honour is a personal gift of the Queen

Harry will have to start being extra nice to Auntie Anne as the Princess Royal is the Grand Master of the Order. And he has been given the honour at an earlier stage in his life than two of his uncles - Prince Andrew and Prince Edward were both admitted in 2011, the year after the Countess of Wessex.

The Prince of Hearts is now a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order

As this was a personal honour, the Queen awarded it in private at Buckingham Palace and no photos of that event will be released. But the presence now of those four letters after Harry's name are enough to let the world know just how proud his grandmother is of Prince Henry of Wales KCVO.
