Ladies Day at Ascot 2015

It's the high point of the fashion stakes at the most glamourous race meeting in town. Ladies Day at Royal Ascot is all about hats, frocks and looking fab. But, dare we say it, it is sometimes a bit of a letdown with some trying too hard and others looking just slightly more done up than other days.

The Queen with Princess Beatrice arriving at Ladies Day at Royal Ascot 2015

It's rare to get a total fashion winner at Ladies Day but in 2015 there were some pretty impressive royal attempts. Here are five fashions from the big style day at Ascot 2015.

The Queen

The Queen chose a very light aquamarine for Ladies Day. It was the palest of her three outfits so far and the loveliest with it.

The single breasted coat was fastened with brass buttons and there was a white print dress beneath it. But it was the hat that looked most different from days one and two with the Queen choosing a wider brim on a flatter design.

It was chic, cool and set the bar for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. Another winner.

Princess Beatrice of York

Princess Beatrice had arrived at Royal Ascot in day one in an outfit that promised much but delivered little. This time round was different as she went for understated and won.

The two tone hat, with a very bright crown, was striking without being overwhelming while her white fitted dress stopped at just the right point (no epic skirts in Monday's mould) and her shoes did a quirky little match with the hat.

They're also very royal with Queen Maxima and Queen Mathilde both sporting similar pairs in recent weeks. And she even got away with the midnight blue bag with her name on it in glitter. Yes, glitter. Overall opinion - an A* for Bea.

Princess Eugenie of York

Not quite so much success for her little sister. Princess Eugenie went for black and ended up looking rather overwhelmed by it all.

It's a hard colour to pull off at Royal Ascot even on a grey day. With a backdrop of golden sunshine it becomes all but impossible. The jacket looked hot but things got better for the princess when took it off to reveal a print dress with a quirky design.

Overall, though, this was a tough one to take on and Eugenie didn't quite manage it. Overall opinion - try lighter and brighter next year.

The Countess of Wessex

No prizes for guessing what's going to come next - yes, Sophie looked amazing again at Royal Ascot.

Her wardrobe this year has been non stop winners and Ladies Day was no different. A cool, pale dove grey dress with T-shirt sleeves and a pleated skirt all topped with a stunner of a hat that she wore with style.

If this was Kate's wardrobe, it would be all over the front pages. Sophie is a real fashion leader of the royal pack right now. Overall opinion - pure class, total sophistication, someone stop her.

Anne, The Princess Royal

There's been a theme for Anne's clothes at Ascot and it's not just that no one does royal recycling like the Princess Royal. The Queen's daughter has kept with browns, greys and blacks mixed with lots of white and given us a 21st century take on the 1970s that's worked. Take note, Eugenie.

Ladies Day saw Anne choose a rather pretty print coat in oatmeal with an ornate and rather retro brown and black embroidered pattern. The hat was brown and beige and the effect was fresh and interesting.

Anne has made it clear in the past she really couldn't care less what people think of her clothes but this outfit is a winner. Overall opinion - true to her style and spot on for Ladies Day.
