A royal summer dress duel

It was a battle no one expected Letizia to lose but as the thermometer soared and the summer dresses came out, there was a three way attack on that most difficult of fashion items in the royal wardrobe. Summer frocks mean light and floaty which can be hard to match with the demands of regal dressing. Today a trio of royal women gave us their take on it. And Queen Letizia in beige ended up in bronze medal position.

After carrying her coat round the city of light for most of day two of her State Visit to France, the Spanish queen was light and bright in a summer shift dress as her visit came to an end. But while it suited the weather, it lacked the wow factor of many of her other outfits and, dare we say it, verged on the underdressed for a royal engagement.

Add big earrings, wavy hair and a pair of shoes about as modern as any ever seen on a queen and there was a classy summer look, albeit one that looked ever so slightly warm as the morning wore on, the sun got brighter and we all wondered whether the leather of the dress was getting a bit hot.

Meanwhile, Queen Maxima looked about as cool as could be in white as she attended meetings in New York in her role as a UN special envoy in finance.

The Dutch queen attended meetings in a basket weave white two piece suit which was almost a dress and only added to the super stellar wardrobe that she's worn while in Canada and the US over the past week.

But the gold medal easily goes to a princess fast becoming the uncrowned fashion queen of Europe. Victoria of Sweden just can't help picking fabulous outfits at the moment and the bright white dress with even brighter multi coloured geometric print she picked for her first day in Portugal was up there with the best.

Plus she wore bright blue suede shoes with it giving endless writers endless chances to make Elvis puns. Not a bad day at the royal office.

And this day of sundresses signalled the start of the warm weather season and plenty more chances to see the hard work that goes into making the littlest dresses in the wardrobe into big royal fashion statements. Summer, here we come....
