This time last week, they were cheering them to the podium in Rio. Now, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima have welcomed the medal winners of TeamNL to one of their royal homes to celebrate their success at the Olympics.

The gold, silver and bronze stars were welcomed to the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague by the King and Queen of the Netherlands on August 24th to celebrate their success at Rio 2016.  The team brought back 19 medals in total including eight golds and in a nod to that success Maxima added a pair of gold sandals to her orange dress.

The athletes celebrated with the royal couple who were also joined by Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, and they all posed for a photo in the sunshine on the steps of the Palace.  Willem-Alexander and Maxima, along with their three daughters, spent several days in Rio cheering on their country's athletes. And now as they came home victorious, they were there to make sure the celebrations got off to a right royal start.
