Royal Rio 2016: the youngest fan

You're never too young to show your royal support for your national football team as Prince Nicolas demonstrates

There's been a lot of royal support at Rio but even the members of Europe's ruling houses who are too young to make the long trip to Brazil have been showing their allegiance. Ahead of the women's gold medal match between Sweden and Germany, Prince Nicolas donned his team's home kit and showed them he was right behind them.  Meet Sweden's youngest royal fan.

While granny and granddad got to sit pitch side during the match, their eldest grandson was running around with a football of his own on an image shared on the Facebook page of his mother, Princess Madeleine. Nicolas, who is now fourteen months old, looked like a proper football fan in the making with his team colours and a ball of his own as well as a huge smile that had enough cheekiness about it to indicate that after the photo was taken there was a lot of throw, catch and kick.

Meanwhile, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia cheered on their nation's team through their match which they eventually lost 2-1 to Germany. But there were plenty of consoling smiles and the silver medallists know that if they get invited to a royal reception on their return, there is one little prince who is already a huge fan.
