On This Day....Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother is born

Her birthday was a summer tradition for years, ending the news with happy photos of a family celebrating alongside its matriarch. When she turned 100, millions marked the moment with her. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother was born on this day in 1900.



Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon was born on August 4th 1900, the daughter of Claude and Cecilia Bowes-Lyon who became Earl and Countess of Strathmore when she was four. She married Albert, Duke of York, second son of King George V on April 26th 1923 at Westminster Abbey. She became queen consort on December 11th 1936 when her husband became George VI on the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII. She was widowed on February 6th 1952 and her elder daughter became Queen Elizabeth II> Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, died on March 30th 2002 and is buried at Windsor.
