On This Day...Edward VII is crowned




He waited decades to become king but on this day, in 1902, Albert Edward, eldest son of Queen Victoria, was crowned alongside his wife, Alexandra of Denmark.


Edward VII was born on November 9th 1841 and became Prince of Wales on December 8th the same year. He ascended the throne on January 22nd 1901 and his coronation took place on August 9th 1902 having been postponed when the new king developed appendicitis. Edward reigned for nine years and died on May 6th 1910. He was succeeded by his second son who became King George V.
