Birthday on the balcony

If you're having a great time on your birthday and lots of people want to celebrate with you, why not head out on to the balcony and get really happy? As Margrethe II of Denmark turned 76, she threw herself into enjoying the day with a balcony appearance in Copenhagen surrounded by her family. It was happiness all round.

Margrethe and Henrik of Denmark celebrating her 76th birthday

The Queen of Denmark took centre stage, as you would expect of a birthday girl, by appearing in the middle of the balcony with her husband, Prince Henrik - no longer Prince Consort in a suprise move from earlier this week.

On either side, her two children and their families joined her with until we had a full row of royals waving to the crowds - and there were a lot of crowds there to wave to. Spreading out along the whole balcony was a good move with so many people to see.

While Frederik, Mary and their four children looked after one side, Joachim, Marie and their family took the other side at the Amaliemborg Palace on April 16th.

Crown Prince Frederik, Prince Joachim, Mary and Marie also joined Queen Margrethe and Henrik in the centre for a bit of a birthday wave.

We also got a special birthday moment when the Queen of Denmark was joined by all her grandchildren for a special wave and then it was and then it was indoors to celebrate the rest of the day.

Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid was born on April 16th 1940, the eldest child of the couple who would become King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark. She succeeded to the throne on her father's death in January 1972 and marked her ruby jubilee in 2012. Last year, for her 75th birthday, there were several days of celebrations involving royals from across Europe but this time round it was very much a family affair for Margrethe of Denmark with a birthday on the balcony.
