Carriages and concert for a king

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia on their way to a concert to mark his 70th birthday tonight

Carriages at seven tonight for King Carl XVI Gustaf but he wasn't having an early night. The Swedish monarch and his family headed to the Nordic Museum in Stockholm for an evening of music to mark his 70th birthday. And they did it in style.

The king and his consort arrived by carriage looking very glamourous and ready for the big day of partying ahead of them tomorrow.

Crown Princess Victoria was enjoying her first evening engagement since the birth of Prince Oscar on March 2nd. She arrived with husband. Prince Daniel, and that other new royal parent, Prince Carl Philip.

Princess Sofia stayed at home - understandable really given that she gave birth just ten days ago. It's been reported she may attend the morning engagements on the birthday itself.

Princess Madeleine and Chris O'Neill were also there - this is their first visit to Stockholm since the birth of Carl Philip and Sofia's son, Alexander, so it will be a chance to get to know their new nephew for the first time.

Earlier in the day, the King and Queen of Sweden had held audiences with different authorities who wanted to pay their respects to Carl XVI Gustaf on his big day.

More presents for the birthday king as Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia have house guests on April 29th

They also attended a reception by the Royal Artistic Academies in Stockholm with Victoria and Daniel.

But it was the concert attended by family and arrived in by carriage that showed the birthday celebrations are well and truly under way. The big birthday in Sweden starts here.
